David Paul Morris | Getty Images News | Getty ImagesThe iPhone could have had an Intel chip inside. It would've made sense to use Intel chips, which ran on the best desktops at the time, including Apple's Macs. Braithwaite, who worked at Intel in the 1980s, said Intel's process engineers were the company's "crown jewels." Intel doesn't have a GPU competitor to Nvidia's AI accelerators, but it has an AI chip called Gaudi 3. For comparison, AMD expects about $2 billion in annual AI chip revenue.

While much of the "buzz has been around Tesla," Singh underscored the initiatives will also attract other foreign automakers, highlighting that Vietnam's leading EV maker "VinFast has already announced its intent." Apple saw sales of its iPhones fall 19.1% in the first three months of the year, Counterpoint's data showed, as Chinese telecommunications and consumer electronics giant Huawei saw a resurgence in its smartphone business. The Shenzhen, China-based firm saw sales of its smartphones surge a whopping 69.7% in the first quarter, Counterpoint said. Starting in 2019, the U.S. slapped sanctions on Huawei in an effort to stop it from accessing such technology, nearly wiping out Huawei's smartphone business.

New Delhi CNN —Huawei is not only making a roaring comeback in China, it is also on the verge of overtaking Apple in the world’s largest smartphone market. Its market share now stands at 15.7%, while Huawei’s has jumped to 15.5%, from 9.3% last year. Counterpoint’s data comes just days after another market research firm IDC said Apple’s global smartphone sales had tumbled 10% in the first quarter, mainly because of loss of momentum in China. Overall smartphone sales in China grew 1.5% in the first quarter, according to Counterpoint. Local smartphone makers Vivo and Honor were the top two brands by market share.

AdvertisementTim Cook would like you to think everything is going swimmingly for Apple in China. It's already won over some consumers since launching the Mate 60 Pro series last year. The Huawei Mate 60 rivals the latest iPhone. They expect another decline in iPhone sales in the region in Apple's quarterly earnings on May 2. Cook might be putting on a brave face, but iPhone sales in China may keep sliding if Huawei has its way.

Apple produced $14 billion worth of iPhones in India over the last fiscal year, a sign of the company's continued effort to manufacture more devices outside of China, a report from Bloomberg said Wednesday. As relations between the U.S. and China have soured, Apple has worked to diversify its supply chain by expanding production in countries like Vietnam and India. Apple now makes around 1 in 7, or 14%, of its iPhones in India, twice the amount it produced there last year, the report said. In June 2023, Apple CEO Tim Cook and other tech executives met with India's prime minister, Narendra Modi, at the White House. A Counterpoint Research report from March found that iPhone sales in China dropped 24% in the first six weeks of 2024.

Apple is wrapping up a rough quarter, but history and Wall Street analysis show there is reason to expect a bounce ahead. Apple shares have typically risen following a quarter that ends down at least 10%, according to CNBC Pro data. 'Best bought on weakness' Despite the tough period, Wall Street sees reason for optimism ahead. Apple "is a stock best bought on weakness in general as they probably have the best, or one of the best management teams in the world," Mahoney said. In the median quarter following the losing one, shares jumped more than 14%.

BANGKOK (AP) — Vietnamese automaker VinFast announced Tuesday that it plans to sell its electric vehicles in Thailand and said it had tied up with auto dealers to open showrooms in the country. VinFast, which only began exporting its EVs last year, faces stiff competition in Thailand from Chinese automakers like BYD. The Thai EV market is small but growing fast, buoyed by incentives and subsidies from the government. VinFast hopes to start selling both its electric scooters and electric SUVs in the country in the next two months, Vu Dang Yen Hang, chief executive officer of VinFast Thailand, told The Associated Press. But the EV market remains small, accounting for only 0.5% of EV sales worldwide in 2022.

For years, Apple dominated the market for high-end smartphones in China. But evidence is mounting that, for many in China, the iPhone no longer holds the appeal it used to. Meanwhile, sales for one of Apple’s longstanding Chinese rivals, Huawei, surged 64 percent. Analysts say its latest product, a $3,500 virtual reality headset released in February, is still years away from gaining mainstream appeal. For a decade, China has been the iPhone’s most important market after the United States and accounted for roughly 20 percent of Apple’s sales.

STR | AFP | Getty ImagesIn the race against Tesla for the global electric car market, Chinese automaker BYD is pushing hard overseas despite rising barriers to the U.S. market. Given policy uncertainty around Chinese EV exports to major markets like the U.S. and Europe, BYD is seeking to bolster overseas sales by moving production to regions perceived as more friendly. The U.S. has tried to support adoption of electric cars domestically, but sales penetration is well below that of China. EY predicts the electric car market in the region will grow exponentially to at least $80 billion a year in sales in the next decade. The rapid growth of BYD and other Chinese electric car companies has other automakers worried.

Fed Chair Jerome Powell has a chance to provide more insight when he testifies before Congress on Wednesday and Thursday. Those reports pushed back market bets on when the Fed will start cutting interest rates. Investors will closely listen for any hints from Powell about what the Fed is looking for, data-wise, before it begins to lower interest rates. Powell will also be asked about the economic pain Americans are feeling as a result of elevated inflation and interest rates. When interest rates fall, holding income-paying assets (like bonds) becomes less appealing than owning the precious metal.

Apple needs to release GenAI services soon — or risk Nvidia overtaking it in value, analyst says. The prediction comes as Apple suffers a decline in iPhone sales in China. Apple is shifting its focus further towards generative AI after killing its electric car project. One key reason Apple may need to ramp up its generative AI efforts is because of iPhone sales headwinds. Leaders of the project reportedly said it nixed the car so employees on that team could instead work on generative AI.

Read previewThe last thing Tim Cook needs this year is for the iPhone to give him a headache. Unfortunately for Apple, that task could be complicated as signs emerge that its workhorse gadget needs a revamp. In its most recent quarter, Apple generated almost $70 billion of its $119.6 billion total revenue from iPhone sales. China, Apple's most important international market, has started to sour on iPhones, bucking a trend of growth in other regions. Apple's AI efforts, led by ex-Googler and senior vice president John Giannandrea, could introduce several AI features to iPhones that offer an edge over Chinese competitors.
